Summer Safety Tips – CFC talks about fires.

We’ve entered the hottest time of the year and the builder’s busy season. It’s also the season for fires in Cape Town. All fires start small, but when the weather is hot, dry and windy (think the infamous South Easter), a small fire can quickly become a threat to life and property.

Most of the fires we see in summer are caused naturally and occur in areas of dry vegetation, however, fires can also be related to building and construction.

Some basic rules to keep in mind this season:

  • No open flame or fire may be permitted unless in a demarcated area
  • Ensure that a fire is extinguished properly with water
  • No fire of any nature may burn through the night
  • Ensure that a cigarette is completely extinguished before disposal

You can also lower your risk of a fire in summer construction by following these tips:

Keep your electrics in check: Dust can settle over capacitors and other electrical components and cause tracking faults, which can create fires. Running multiple cooling units together consistently and for long periods of time can result in overloading and overheating, which also presents an opportunity for fires to start.

Gas storage: Fire risk is heightened by high ambient temperatures and relief valves that open at too-low pressures. Store gas cylinders upright and never indoors.

Alarm audits: Your preventive maintenance should include fire alarm testing. Replace any old or burned out batteries regularly. A certified fire protection provider can help you streamline your fire protection program and keep track of required inspections.
